Coming Up: War and the North

So, this week we compared the characteristics of the Subarctic and Arctic and found the treeline on a map (doesn't sound familiar? Check the text definition of "treeline").
I enjoyed the tour of the maps in the Geog Dept hallway--especially the 1961 map of Canada compared to current day.

Project ideas are starting to form--most sound pretty interesting. Don't forget to send in your team idea (one person emails me with names and topics, and CC's the rest of the team). Pls don't add James Bay Hydro Project to the list, especially as I've already handed you an an Issue Note on this --copied in your emails about an hour ago.
At the next class we'll do the impact of World War Two on northern Canada and Alaska. This is one of my favourite topics.
If anyone has access to the documentary "The War" check out the sections on
U Boats and the Atlantic seaboard to get an image of how submarines "monitored" the shipping lanes in the Atlantic (and we'll talk about the Pacific version of this at class).
Pls read pages 76 to 93 in Chapter 3 before class (October 1st). Last year I did WW2 and the Cold War at the same class but too many students mixed the two time periods, so this term I'm splitting these up.
See you on the 1st!
