Alaska Highway: 27,000 Workers!

I was just reading an article called "Road Warriors" in the Oct/Nov 2009 The Beaver (Canada's History Magazine). The article was written by Hope Morritt a woman who was a reporter at the time of the construction of the Alaska highway.
Hope mentions that there were 11,000 soldiers and 16,000 American and Canadian civilians employed in the construction of the Alaska highway. I had only heard about the soldiers and didn't realize that they were outnumbered by civilians.
Hope also mentioned that maintaining the highway was a nightmare: 43 bridges were wrecked by ice jams during one spring meltdown.

Don't forget to bring your course pack this week. We're going to be analyzing the Plan Canada Population article.

Any questions for next week's mid-term? See you Thursday.
